BIOMENTS: Processes of my SciLife Featuring General Biology 1

Hi, I’m Shandy Raene D. Lagubana, a grade 11- student.
This blog I made will explain what I’ve learned about our General Biology 1 and the experiences  I cherished during these times. I hope you’ll learn something from me.

LET’S START!

When did it all Started?
It was my first biology class in Senior High School. But that topic was discussed before. So, I easily understand the concepts. There were 3 cell theories that I learned. The ff: were: “All animals are made up of cells” that were proposed by Theodore Schwann, “All plants are made up cells” which was proposed by Matthias Schleiden, and “Cells were made from pre-existing cells” that were proposed by Rudolf Virchow.

I imagined that if there’s no such cell theories, the life that exists on earth would be a mystery. Fortunately, thanks to all the genius scientists who discovered them and continuously studied the cell.
There was this kind of representation that I learned about the cell structure and function. It was interesting that it was easy to understand and visualize.
Let’s compare it to a company. The CEO is the nucleus which controls everything. The cytoplasm is the site of most cell activity like assembling.  The smooth endoplasmic reticulum will transport the materials and the rough endoplasmic reticulum will enable the ribosomes to be attached. The ribosomes will manufacture proteins and the golgi apparatus was assigned to the packaging. The lysosomes will act as garbage collector which was also called as “suicide sacks”. The chloroplast will trap light energy and convert it into chemical bond energy of sugar. While the mitochondria produces energy which acts as the powerhouse.
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have differences and similarities as you observed it above.

Why did I choose Prokaryotic cell as my project?

I was amazed by the prokaryotic cell because even if it was a single-celled organism and lacked a nucleus, it could multiply with its own. Aside from that, it has a cell wall which acts as an extra layer of protection, maintains its conformation, and prevents dehydration.

In addition, while making this project it was actually fun that I happened to miss doing activities in school.
This was my last biology class as a Mondez’s student. As my teacher discussed the lesson, I listened attentively though I felt nervous about transferring sections. The thought that I wasn’t with my junior high classmates made me nervous.
This was a continuation of my general biology journey. I was excited to have a synchronous class because I heard many feedbacks back then, that our teacher was the best in teaching this subject. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a synchronous class that day. But, he uploaded a video of him discussing the cell cycle.  The impression tells everything as I’ve watched the video. I was astonished that it was very easy to understand and I can follow the discussion. The use of hypothetical representations was comprehensible. And the thought that he incorporates creativity along with the discussion made it more exhilarating.

I’ve heard the mitosis and meiosis before. The Prophase-Metaphase- Anaphase-Telophase or the PMAT is the process I didn’t understand back then. But that ends as a memory because now I understood it clearly. While our teacher discussed that lesson, I was jotting down important details that made me understand the lesson quite easily. And I did that practice even when I was in elementary.
This was the most memorable part of the lesson for me. Because while executing the experiment, I remember myself enjoying it. Observing the stages or the happenings on each every step was exciting. I was happy that I finished it that day, even if it’s hard to, because we experienced a black out, with no internet and low battery mobile phones.

However, the current returned in the evening, so I was able to finish the report and observation file and pass it on time. I also made a video presentation of it.
This was the last topic we have on General Biology quarter 1. It was so simple to appreciate, as always. So far, it was my favorite topic because it was slightly connected to biochemistry, which was my favorite lesson when I was in grade 10. So even if it’s the last one, I really learned a lot and I acknowledge it so much.

I can’t imagine myself being tired of learning biology, and the whole concept of science. Because I considered it as my first love. And continuously learning about it, made me realize how I used to dream of becoming a scientist. Now,even though it’s not the ambition I wanted to become, I will constantly believe in it and will endlessly put the love in learning it.
